The car is one of many clones that have been developed around the world over the last 50 years. The Neves Car is based upon a chassis designed by Ron Chapman which is popularly known as the Lo-cost 7, widely made in the UK by companies such as MK Engineering and RAW.
Neves Cars are designed and built to comply with the rules of the Hong Kong Classic car Club (HKCCC) for races held at sepang. These rules allow , at the discretion of the race committee , for cars that are substantially identical to the original cars of the 60's and 70's to be raced as Classic cars. The cars are designed and built in full compliance with the form and spirit of the HKCCC rules.
Based upon the running gear of either a MK1 or MK2 Escort the cars have a space frame chassis, independent double wishbone front suspension and a full roll cage.
The chassis , suspension wishbones , suspension links , Panhard rod roll cage and exhaust manifolds are fabricated in Malaysia , as are the Aluminium body panels , the Fibre glass wings and the Nose cone.
The roll cage has been built in Cold Draw Steel Tubing to meet the requirements of the FIA, and consists of two roll hoops and side impact protection and provides anchor points for the racing seat (s) belt.
The seat (s) is carbon fibre reinforced fibre glass and is again made in Malaysia. While they are styled on the race seats popular as after market additions , they are in fact purpose made to fit the narrow seating area (s), they offer full lateral support and head restraint.
The suspension units are built in Malaysia to the specification of neves cars using settings and spring rates derived from running similar cars at Sepang for the past 5 years. The shock absorbers are mono-tube coil over type and allow easy adjustment of the car's ride height. The tyres come from Malaysia , for dry racing the car has been built to run the 15 x 7 inch slicks manufactured by Silverstone, (as used on the Malaysian Super series MSS cars).
The transmission and rear axle are stock from the Ford Escort , and have been refurbished with new bearings, brake and other consumable parts. The front brakes are from the latter model Ford Cortina and again all consumable parts are replaced. These prove more than adequate for the car weight , which is targeted at 500 to 600 KG.
The engine chosen is a Ford Kent Crossflow OHV (Overhead Valve Unit) with a capacity of either 1300cc or 1600cc and is chosen to meet the rules of Classic Car Racing. They can be extensively modified with big valve head, long duration/high lift cam , twin side draught Webber carbrettors, steel cranks and electronic ignition to produce a target power in excess of 100 BHP per litre. The timing and rocker gear and the oil and cooling systems can be upgraded to allow for the increased power.
At 100 BHP per litre Neves Cars consider the power to be on par with many of today's high performance cars from japan, whilst retaining eligibility for Classic car racing. The abscence of computers/chips etc means that the car is easily maintained at home with a minimum of specialist tools.
